Leigh Day wins Employment Team of the Year at LexisNexis Awards

Two Supreme Court successes secured the title of Employment Law Team of the Year for Leigh Day at the 2022 LexisNexis Awards.

The LexisNexis Legal Awards recognise and celebrate excellence and innovation across the legal sector.

Last year, Leigh Day clients won two Supreme Court cases against ASDA and Uber.

In February 2021, the Supreme Court handed down a judgement in relation to Uber drivers ruling that they should be classed as workers.

The following month another landmark judgment was handed down by the Supreme Court confirming that Asda shop floor workers can compare their roles to those of their colleagues in distribution centres for the purposes of equal pay.

These wins have had implications for other group claims the firm is involved in.

Since the Uber judgment, the Court of Appeal has ruled that Addison Lee is not permitted to appeal an Employment Tribunal’s decision that drivers are entitled to workers’ rights.

Following the Asda judgment, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled a worker in the UK can compare their role with somebody working in a different establishment if a 'single source' has the power to correct the difference in pay; and an Employment Tribunal ruled the roles of Morrisons store workers can be compared to their colleagues in distribution centres.

Leigh Day was also shortlisted for the Award for Sustainability in the 2022 LexisNexis Awards.
