Stuert started work as an apprentice plumber for Vickers Armstrong in the Barrow shipyard at the age of 16. During his apprenticeship he was exposed to asbestos in the course of his work on board vessels, including submarines, which were being constructed in the yard. He worked nearby to others who were mixing and applying asbestos lagging and breathed in the asbestos dust and fibres created as they worked. He spent five years working in confined conditions and came into contact with asbestos daily.
Louisa was able to bring the claim to a swift resolution without issuing court proceedings.
Evidence in relation to Stuert’s financial losses and the impact his mesothelioma had on him was presented to the insurers who acted on behalf of Vickers Armstrong. Stuert and his wife Ann said “Louisa efficiently and speedily brought our case to a very satisfactory conclusion.”
The settlement included provision for the defendants to pay for future medical treatment, such as immunotherapy, which is not currently funded by the NHS.
