Morrisons equal pay - Sue’s story

Sue from Staffordshire has been working at Morrisons for nearly 18 years. She told us that she loves her job and working with people, describing a deep sense of community at the store.

She noted that especially in the cost-of-living crisis, she had noticed that colleagues and customers alike had to “tighten their belts” and that it was especially difficult for families to make ends meet, particularly those with young children.

In March 2020, Sue saw the Leigh Day equal pay claim against Morrisons in an advert on Facebook. She said she was “shocked” to learn that warehouse workers were earning more an hour than store workers and that “in this day and age” we still have such equal pay issues. She joined the claim then and has encouraged most of the staff at her store to join as well.

Since joining the claim, Sue described the changes that she had noticed at work. She believes that staffing levels halved, making her role even more challenging.

Sue says equal pay would change things for the better by ensuring that she and her colleagues who have joined the claim are fairly compensated.

She said: “Backdated compensation would help support children through education, and help to pay off mortgages.”

Sue described her legal team as “armed and ready” for the next phase of the Morrisons equal pay claim and that she could not have worked with a better team than Leigh Day.

On 27 August, Leigh Day announced a landmark equal pay win for thousands of store workers at Next. Leigh Day equal pay lawyers say the result has great significance for other similar equal pay claims, such as the Morrisons claim.

Sue said:

"I’d just like to say how proud I am of Next workers and the Leigh Day team for taking them through. There’s been a lot of hard work involved in this and it took many years to get there. This is a stepping stone for the domino effect. If one can do it, so can we all – we all deserve the same as Next workers and I know we’re going to get it.”

Leigh Day is also bringing equal pay claims on  behalf of shop workers at Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Co-op.
