Geoffrey Smith worked at Sizewell A Nuclear Power Station, Monitoring the Radiation Levels

Posted on 26 June 2024

Geoffrey Smith had worked for the majority of his life, for the C.E.G.B at Sizewell A Nuclear Power Station, in health physics, monitoring the radiation levels at the power station.

He was exposed to asbestos when taking readings in the reactor building during construction of the boilers and associated pipework which was being lagged at the time. He was exposed to yet more asbestos once the station had been brought into commission when asbestos was stripped from the boiler doors to allow access for checks and repairs during annual overhauls.

Geoffrey was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the end of November 2019 and asked Helen Ashton to deal with his case.

Helen quickly pursued the claim but Geoffrey sadly passed away on 28 January 2020. His son, Paul, continued the claim on behalf of Geoffrey’s estate. The case then settled within 4 months from the date Geoffrey initially approached Leigh Day to pursue a claim.

Geoffrey’s son Paul said, “ I am highly delighted with the outcome. Although Dad didn’t live long enough to benefit from the compensation himself, he would have been delighted to know that it is helping his grandchildren in their lives. I am so very grateful for your hard work, advice, care and attention. Absolutely faultless throughout. Thank you so much.”
