Asbestos claims
Partner Kevin Johnson holds multiple accreditations as a specialist in asbestos and occupational disease claims and is a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Kevin manages our Liverpool office. He has more than 25 years' experience of acting for victims of asbestos exposure, and has represented people who have worked in the heavy industries of the North West such as dockworkers, shipyard workers, Merchant Navy seamen, construction workers and engineers.
Kevin has acted for asbestos sufferers in some of the leading test cases. He is a member of the Law Society Personal Injury Panel and sits on the Oversight Committee of the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme where he represents asbestos sufferers.
Partner Joanne Candlish also works in the asbestos team, based in the firm’s Liverpool office. Joanne is an APIL accredited Senior Litigator, Asbestos and Occupational Disease Specialist, with over 31 years’ experience dealing with asbestos cases. She joined Leigh Day in January 2024 having previously worked at a number of claimant law firms.
Human Rights
In 2024, Leigh Day strengthened its commitment to defending human rights in the North by to our office in Liverpool. The team is led by partner Leanne Devine, a respected member of the INQUEST Lawyers Group and a panel member of the Centre for Women’s Justice.
With a legal aid contract secured, our Liverpool office offers vital legal aid-funded representation for inquests involving the state and claims against public authorities. Leanne and her team are dedicated to supporting families seeking justice after losing loved ones, especially in cases where public services may be at fault.
The expansion means that residents in Liverpool and the surrounding areas can now access expert legal aid-funded representation to uphold their rights under the Human Rights Act and the Equality Act.
The Leigh Day Liverpool office opened in 2017 to serve local Liverpool residents and beyond, particularly in Human Rights claims and compensation claims for industrial disease, including asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural thickening.
