Legal expertise
Since joining Leigh Day, Josh has been involved in a number of challenging an high-profile cases within Tessa Gregory’s team. Notably, Josh has worked on the Diego Garcia litigation in which Leigh Day represent a number of vulnerable refugees who are stranded on a remote militarised Island in the Indian Ocean. Our clients have successfully secured their right to legal aid, challenged the asylum decision process, and obtained limited freedoms to leave the camp in which they are detained. Ongoing legal challenges are being pursued regarding the refugees’ detention, and the failure of the British Indian Ocean Territory government to relocate individuals to a safe third country.
In addition, Josh has worked on a number of cases fighting for the rights of British citizens abroad. Further, Josh has worked on the successful challenge against the previous government’s policy of vetting independent experts for civil service events. Following Leigh Day’s involvement, the government agreed to withdraw the guidance (which required civil servants to consider whether experts had ever been critical of government ministers), suspend the vetting process, and initiate a policy review.
Josh has also worked on a number of other cases addressing fundamental issues of freedom of speech, data protection and freedom of information. He has also worked in the field of education law, where he has handled university complaints, appeals procedures and a successful complaint to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education.
Before joining Leigh Day, Josh worked as a paralegal at a large legal aid firm in the City of London. There, he worked on complex asylum and immigration matters, including appeals to the Upper Tribunal. He also represented numerous prisoners in cases alleging breaches of human rights.
Josh holds a first-class degree in Law from the University of Cambridge, where he received multiple prizes for outstanding academic performance.
