Georgia Rycroft

Associate solicitor

Georgia is an associate solicitor in the international and group litigation team, specialising in litigation arising from human rights abuses and environmental damage involving multinational corporations.

Legal Expertise

Georgia’s work at Leigh Day includes:

  • Kabwe: Georgia is currently assisting Richard Meeran and South African attorney Zanele Mbuyisa on a class action against Anglo American South Africa Ltd in the Johannesburg High Court on behalf of Zambian communities living in the vicinity of the Kabwe lead mine who are suffering from lead poisoning.
  • Catarina Oliveira da Silva & Others v Brazil Iron Limited & Brazil Iron Trading Limited: Georgia is currently assisting Richard Meeran and Jonny Buckley on claims on behalf of 100+ residents from two quilombola communities who allege that the operations of the mine have caused them to suffer, inter alia, from iron ore dust pollution, physical and psychological injuries.
  • AAA v Camellia PLC & Others: Georgia assisted Daniel Leader’s team on claims on behalf of 80+ Kenyan claimants alleging serious human rights abuses and sexual abuse by security guards employed by Kakuzi PLC in Kenya.
  • AAA v Petra Diamonds Ltd & Williamson Diamonds Ltd: Georgia assisted Daniel Leader’s team on claims on behalf of 70+ artisanal miners in Tanzania who alleged serious assaults inflicted by mine security guards.

Prior to converting to law in London, Georgia worked for a number of different NGOs and international institutions, interning in the Prosecutor’s Office at the International Criminal Court and training with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development. 

Education

Georgia holds a bachelor’s degree with a triple major in International Relations, Psychology and French; and an Honour’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Cape Town. Her dissertation won the national award for Best Thesis from the South African Association of Political Science.

She holds a Master’s in International Security, specialising in Human Rights and the Middle East (Cum Laude), from the L'Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po); and a Master’s in Legal Practice from BPP (Distinction).

Georgia speaks English, Afrikaans and French.
